Antonio J. Fruits represent an important part of the human diet and show extensive variation in size and shape between and within cultivated species. The genetic basis of such variation has been studied most extensively in tomato, where currently six quantitative trait loci QTLs involving these traits have been fine-mapped and the genes underlying the QTLs identified. The genes responsible for the cloned QTLs belong to families with a few to many members.

As the terms imply, warm-season crops grow optimally in higher temperatures than cool-season crops. In Pennsylvania, warm-season crops generally are transplanted into the garden, and may be grown on plastic mulch, rather than direct seeded. This is because the growing season when the temperature is 'warm' enough for these crops to be planted in the garden is often too short for the plants to mature from seed.Cool-season crops can often be planted and produced in two growing seasons, in early spring often prior to the last frost and in the early fall.

They must be planted early enough in the spring to reach maturity before temperatures are too warm and the seeds require cool temperatures to germinate in the fall. Warm-season crops are produced in one growing season that begins after the last spring frost. Water and fertilizer requirements are also dependent on whether the crop is a cool-season or warm-season crop. Cool-season crops have root systems that are generally shallower than warm-season crops. This means that cool-season plants may need to be watered and fertilized more often.

The plants have limited access to water because the root zone is small. Warm-season crops tend to have deeper root systems. They also need to be watered and fertilized often as higher temperatures lead to quicker water loss through plant uptake and evaporation. In general cool-season crops are root crops and salad greens. Warm-season crops are typically fruits.

Classification of Crops

Classification of fruits according to the horticultural scientist To prevent confusion, horticultural scientists define a fruit as an edible seed-bearing structure that: a consists of fleshy tissue, and b is produced by a perennial. A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years without being replanted. The horticultural definition of a fruit excludes nuts and vegetables. Nuts are firm rather than fleshy. Most vegetables are annuals; i.

Adapted from: Silva, E. Respiration and ethylene and their relationship to postharvest handling In Wholesale success: a farmer's guide to selling, postharvest handling, and packing produce Midwest edition. Fresh produce is at peak quality when picked; its quality can only be maintained or deteriorated as it is handled and stored. Maintaining crop quality after harvest is an important consideration for any fresh market produce grower or handler. This article addresses two important factors related to post-harvest produce quality: respiration and ethylene. Despite having been detached from the plant, fruits and vegetables remain as living organs after harvest. Like all living tissues, harvested produce continues to respire throughout its postharvest life. During the process of respiration, carbohydrates are broken down to their constituent parts to produce energy to run cellular processes, thus keeping the cells and organism alive.Throughout this process, oxygen is consumed and water, carbon dioxide, and energy are released. Thus, reducing the rate of respiration is an important consideration in extending the postharvest life of a fruit or vegetable and optimizing postharvest quality.

Owing to its vast available land resource favourable agro-climatic conditions, and hard-working farmers, there is immense scope for further growth and development of Horticulture sector in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. Much has been achieved during last plan periods due to hard work of farmers and constant efforts of the department of Horticulture through implementation of various centrally and state sponsored schemes. Arrival of huge quantities of Orange, Ginger, Pine-apple, Large cardamom etc in local markets and markets of Assam during seasons is a testimony of this fact. However, much more yet remains to be done to exploit the full potential for development of Horticulture sector in Lohit district. Hence, there is huge opportunity for farmers entrepreneurs, and traders alike to take up Horticulture as source of self-employment and income generation in Lohit district.

Lawrence M. Kelly, Ph. His research focuses on the evolution and classification of flowering plants.Despite the year-round availability of most produce, few things say summer like a juicy, vine-ripened tomato from the garden or a produce stand. You can slice them, dice them, and use them in stews, sauces, and salads. Or are they? Is a tomato a vegetable, as most people think it is, or is it really a fruit? In general terms, fruits are usually sweet and vegetables are savory.
